Professor Lucas holds the title of University of California Distinguished Research Professor of Plant Biology at UC Davis. He has also held, or currently holds academic positions as Lady Davis Professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Franqui International Chair at the University of Antwerp, World Class University Professor at Gyeongsang National University, South Korea, and Chair Professorships at Southwest University, Chongqing, China, and Distinguished Guest Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Dr. Lucas received his B.Sc. (Hons) from the University of Adelaide in 1971, his Ph.D in 1975 and his D.Sc. in 1990. He was appointed to the faculty at UC Davis in 1977 where his research team has made seminal contributions to the field of Plant Biology, specifically in the areas of plant membrane transport, plasmodesmal biology - in relation to both plant development and viral infection, and long-distance signaling through the vascular system, and the phloem in particular. Dr. Lucas has co-authored over 250 articles, has served on the Editorial Boards of numerous journals and as Associate Editor for the Journal of Theoretical Biology, The Plant Cell and is currently Co-Editor-in-chief of the Journal of Integrative Plant Biology. He is a Highly Cited Researcher (Original Member), has been awarded the ASPB Gibbs Medal, the Belgian Francqui Medal and is a foreign member of the French National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, an Inaugural Fellow of the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB), and Honorary Life Member of the Australian Society of Plant Scientists.
