Joanne grew up in a rural farming region of New South Wales, Australia, and left home after high school to undertake a Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) at Monash University, Melbourne. She completed her Ph. D. in plant physiology and molecular biology at La Trobe University in 2016, and joined the GIFS team in Saskatoon, Canada, shortly after. Her research interests include plant cell biology, reproductive biology and proteomics, and she joins GIFS to apply proteomics and other molecular techniques to understanding apomixis in Boechera.
Joanne is also passionate about teaching, and takes great pleasure in sharing her enthusiasm for science with graduate and undergraduate students. She is regularly invited as a motivational speaker for community and undergraduate programs, and she was nominated for the prestigious La Trobe Teaching Award in 2015.
Outside of the lab, Joanne is passionate about Australian wine, coffee and native flora. On Sundays she enjoys a good cryptic crossword, baking, and Instagramming pictures of her cat, Morgan.
